Must You Consult Your Spouse to Give Your Parents Money?

#TheCounsellor

This question is one of the key financial questions we ask couples during counselling which reveals if they are actually one (a couple) financially or are alone (singles) financially.

This question can only be properly answered if every money that each of the spouses earns (or get as a monetary gift) is family money or individual money. If every money a spouse gets is supposed to be family money, then no one should spend it without following the family’s budget. And if that spending must change from what’s in the budget, then the other person’s consent must and should be sort and had first before the change of plans.

If every money you get belongs to the family, but the family gives you some personal cut from the family money, that cut is your personal money to use as you like. You can give anybody from it without first consulting with your spouse. However, you would still have to give an account if you come back to the family purse, requesting for more money for something that your personal money ought to have fixed.

This is my opinion on this particular question. Use whatever poney rules and policy that works for your marriage. If it is working for you, don’t change it unless you feel the change would better things.
